The Silence After Applying
You've spent hours tailoring your resume. You hit submit. Then nothing.
If this is your experience, you're not alone — and it's usually fixable. Here are the five most common resume mistakes that kill callback rates.
Mistake 1: The "Responsibilities" Trap
Most resumes list what you were supposed to do, not what you actually achieved.
❌ "Responsible for managing the customer support team"
✅ "Led a team of 8 support agents, reducing average ticket resolution time from 48h to 12h"
Every bullet should answer: "So what?" If it doesn't, cut it or rewrite it.
Mistake 2: One Resume for Every Job
ATS systems scan for exact keyword matches. A resume written for "Product Manager" roles won't rank well for "Head of Product" even if the jobs are identical.
Spend 10 minutes per application adjusting 3-4 key phrases to match the job description language.
Mistake 3: The Wall of Text Summary
Your summary section is the only part most recruiters actually read before deciding to continue. If it's three dense paragraphs, they won't read it.
Limit it to 2 sentences: what you do + one specific proof point.
Mistake 4: Missing Metrics
Numbers validate claims. "Increased revenue" means nothing. "Increased ARR from $2M to $3.4M in 18 months" is a different sentence entirely.
Scan every bullet. Add a number where you can.
Mistake 5: Overcrowded Formatting
If a recruiter has to work to find your key information, they won't. White space is not wasted space — it's breathing room.
Use clear section headers. Keep margins. Don't reduce font below 10pt.
The Quick Fix
Go through your resume right now and highlight every bullet point that starts with "Responsible for" or "Helped with". Rewrite them all. That single change will improve your callback rate.
