Why Interviewers Ask This
They're not trying to catch you out. They want to see self-awareness and a growth mindset — two traits that reliably predict job performance.
A polished, dishonest answer ("I work too hard!") actually signals the opposite of both.
The 3-Part Framework
1. Name a real weakness.
Pick something genuine but not disqualifying for the role. "I sometimes over-explain technical details to non-technical stakeholders" is honest and credible.
2. Show what you've done about it.
"I've been using the 'headline first' technique in presentations — lead with the decision needed, then add detail only if asked."
3. Show the progress.
"My last three project updates got positive feedback specifically on clarity, so it's working."
What to Avoid
- Fake weaknesses ("I'm a perfectionist")
- Weaknesses central to the job (applying for a data role and saying "I struggle with numbers")
- Long, rambling answers — aim for under 90 seconds
Example Answer
"I used to struggle with delegating. I'd hold onto tasks I could have passed on because I wanted to ensure quality. I've been working on this by defining clearer handoff criteria and building in check-ins rather than doing things myself. My team's output has actually improved since I started trusting the process more."
Honest. Specific. Forward-looking. That's the formula.
