The Offer Arrives
You've done the interviews. They like you. The offer email lands. Your stomach does a flip.
Most people write back within the hour: "Thank you so much, I accept!"
That's almost always a mistake.
The Phrase
"I'm really excited about this role. Before I sign, I'd like to discuss the base salary — is there any flexibility?"
That's it. Simple. Polite. Effective.
According to research by Salary.com, 75% of employers have room to negotiate on the initial offer. But fewer than 40% of candidates ever ask.
Why It Works
- "I'm really excited" — signals you want the job (reduces their fear of losing you)
- "Before I sign" — creates mild urgency without pressure
- "Is there any flexibility?" — open-ended, non-confrontational
What Happens Next
They'll either say yes, no, or open a conversation. Any of those is fine. What you've done is communicated that you know your value — which every good employer respects.
The Number Conversation
If they ask what number you have in mind, come prepared. Research the market rate (Glassdoor, LinkedIn Salary, levels.fyi for tech roles). Anchor 10–15% above your target. If they can't move on salary, ask about signing bonus, remote flexibility, or extra leave.
One Rule
Never negotiate via email if you can help it. Ask for a short call. It's harder to say no to a voice than a text box.
